Chapter 3

Henry sat in the bright light of the street lantern.

The very bright headlights of his daughter’s car also shone right on him. Lily fell down on her knees beside him, looking at the dark little house further down the path. The light shining on her face was so bright it was a little hard to see it clearly. She had crossed her arms protectively in front of her chest, and was shaking from head to toe like he hadn’t seen her do since she had been a little girl.

“Last time you were so afraid,” Henry said hoarsely. “Was back when...”

“Back when mom told me she was sick,” Lily interrupted him.

Henry nodded while he wiped some blood off his face.

It was his own blood, his upper lip was busted.

From one of the times he fell down, maybe.

“You told me that it’d be alright,” Lily said.

“I thought it would be,” said Henry. “I thought I’d make sure of that.”

Lily momentarily turned her head to look at him, but then immediately turned back to stare at the dark little house with its broken roof and boarded-up windows. The sight of its shadowy shapes and the deeper dark surrounding them seemed to make her shake even more. The woman in the house could not follow them into such bright light, but it didn’t mean that they were really safe there. Bright as the light was where they sat, darkness was close-by and they were unarmed. Henry looked over his shoulder at the house of the neighbors, which was only a little distance from his.

It was brightly lit and he saw someone move inside.

They must’ve heard the screams, he thought.

“Nice neighborhood I live in,” he said—then, with a lot of effort, he stood up.

Lily also got up, arms still clutched to her chest. “As if you’d run over to help your neighbors.”

She looked like she regretted saying that, but Henry didn’t argue. She put her arm through his, and he let her help him to the car. Lily told him she’d warn the city guards so they could release that woman from the house and make note of her case. Give her—whoever she was—the peace she deserved. The peace she had been looking for, who knew for how long. She didn’t ask him what he had learned about her. And he didn’t ask her if, once the house was cleared, he would have to return there.

“You think one of the neighbors will have already have called the city guards?” Lily asked.

She opened the passenger door of her nice, well-armored car. Henry moved the extra flashlights from the passenger seat to the empty space between the seats. There was a magazine about schools and he put it aside as well, without paying any mind to it. He was thinking about what she’d asked. By the time he sat down he had concluded that if they didn’t want to come help him, why would they make the call.

Lily sat down behind the wheel and immediately put the car in reverse.
